There has been a lot of chatter in the news recently about changes to government funding for Aged Care and if you are confused don’t worry, you are not the only one!

The majority of services available for older people are funded by the Federal Government which now requires you to register with My Aged Care in order to access them.
You can register with My Aged Care at myagedcare.gov.au or by calling 1800 200 422.
Once you are registered, a representative from My Aged Care will talk to you about your needs.

If you only need one or two services they may refer you directly to service providers. If you would like to be referred directly to Holdsworth you can ask them to do so.

If your needs are more complex they may suggest an ACAT assessment to determine whether or not a Home Care Package would be more suitable.

A Home Care Package is an individual allocation of funding for people with higher support needs that can be customised to provide the support that a person needs to stay at home independently.

Once you have been assigned a Home Care Package, you will then need to choose a provider to help you put together a plan and help manage your funds.

My Aged Care will be able to provide you a list of package managers or you can ask to be referred to a package manager of your preference such as Holdsworth.

Each package manager is able to set their own management fees and they must publish these fees. It pays to make sure you are across all fees and inclusions as these amounts are subtracted from your package and will affect the services you can afford.

TIPS TO SECURE THE SUPPORT YOU NEED…

  • It is best to register with My Aged Care even if you are not sure about your needs as some services have waiting lists.
  • Don’t play down your needs in an assessment. If you tell people you are coping well when you are not, they will assume you don’t need services.
